Etiquette and International Women’s Day

On the 8th of March, we celebrate what is globally known as International Women’s Day (IWD).

This day highlights the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements and contributions of women from across the globe, also honouring the strength, resilience, and determination of women everywhere.

International Womens Day, IWD, diversity,

In our celebration, awareness should also be drawn to the fact that although we’ve made significant progress, there’s still a journey ahead to reaching gender equality, as many women still struggle with the challenges that come from gender bias, with women still being denied access to education, healthcare, and political representation in many countries.

They’re also often subjected to gender-based violence and discrimination not only in the workplace but at home.

This fact is reflected in this year’s theme: “Choose to Challenge”, highlighting that there’s still a need to acknowledge and address this on-going issue, by collectively creating a more just and equitable world where women have the same opportunities as men to not only succeed but also thrive.

To commemorate this day, here are 5 Etiquette Tips on how you can regard, celebrate and honour the women around you:

1.Take the time to thank and show appreciation to the women in your life who have supported you or been a good role model.

2. Etiquette is all about showing respect for others and this includes women. Treat women with respect and dignity and this can help promote gender equality and break down stereotypes and biases.

 3. Support charities, organisations and businesses that actively work to support the empowerment of women, by giving financially or supporting women-owed local businesses. You can also volunteer your time at a women’s shelter.

4.Break down social barriers:Etiquette helps to break down social barriers and create more inclusive environments. Be kind, courteous and respectful to people so we can foster a more welcoming and supportive community for everyone.

5.Etiquette encourages us to speak up and take action when we see discrimination harassment or violence against women. So, advocate for change, by being the change and speaking out because your voice is needed.

Overall, etiquette plays an important role in promoting respect, equality and inclusion for women in our personal and professional lives. So let’s take a step forward, raise our voices, and support the cause of gender equality on this special day and beyond.
